Genesis1:1 ‘In the beginning God created ………..’
The pattern is the Golden ratio and is proof of
the earth’s perfect natural mathematical balance.
This image with the ratio Phi, is known as the
Golden Mean.
It is found in the formation of most natural
forms and is based on the Fibonacci sequence of numbers,
1+1=2:1+2=3:2+3=5:3+5=8:5+8=13:8+13=21:13+21=33:21+33=44:
=
1:1:2:3:5:8:13:21:33:44:etc.
These are the numbers of stamens, petals, leaves placed
around a
stem, mollusc shells, patterns of seeds in many flowers, etc.
It is the perfect composition in images,
photography, and paintings;
the basis of Egyptian pyramids, the Parthenon, most
aesthetically pleasing architecture, and it is in the proportions of the perfect
face, e.g. the Mona Lisa.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The world began, (centre)
sun shone and volcanoes exploded. Waters separated from land. Single cells, and
then plants grew. Fungus, invertebrates, insects and animals ate plants. The
cycle continued.
THEN MAN CAME! - as any other animal.
He developed and then
started to change the earth for his ease, greed and selfishness.
Now is this our future? WE
HAVE A CHOICE
1/The bottom section of the golden arc separates to our choices for the future.
The Glorious future that
looking after our world will give us –
Or --
2/ Malachi 4:1
‘For the day cometh, that shall burn like an
oven.’
The Youlgrave village school children
have composed from plastic animals we may lose to Global Warming and they are
set in the bare clay. The significance of this, is that after we have all
perished this is all that will be left!
LETS ENSURE OUR CHILDREN HAVE A GOOD FUTURE
--------------------------------------
All research agrees, (except
Trump!) that we continue living as we are and in 11 years by 2030 there will be no chance to reverse global warming.
The world will heat too much for life to continue as we know it.
OR
Every continent, country,
parish and person try to
HALT the inevitable world increase of heat at 2
degrees more, then we MAY reverse the
damage.
Thank you to all the helpers including the children of
All Saints C of E Primary School who made the plastic creatures.
---------------------- info:-----------------------------------------------------------------
The earth temperatures are
expected to rise by as much as 12 degrees if we continue to live as we do.
Everything will perish and – as David Attenborough states – it will be like
Mars!
If we get to neutral CO2 by 2040 then the
rise will be less but there will be the minimum of life and certainly no trees
or animals including man in 100 years.
If we want to save this planet we have to
stop the carbon increase by 2030 and start the reversal process of enabling the
planet to absorb the extra.
Politicians
are arguing that they cannot do it in the time, as it will alter everyone’s way
of living too much for them to vote for the policies, as no one wants more
expense and less comfort.
The alternative is that there
will be no politicians or policies, no food, no jobs, no trees, no water.
The answer is with the people
deciding to take less and live on less.
PS. If have not already, please listen to the sensible
speech to the
EU parliament
by 16 year Greta Thunberg who saw
no point in going
to school if she hadn’t got a future.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A few simple WAYS FOR US to help :-
1/ Totally insulate your home.
2 /Use green Electricity produced by
wind, solar, air, wave, tidal, ground source,
3/ Repair, don’t renew. Make it to
last and use it till gone.
4 /Eat local food. Know where and
how your food is grown.
5/ Grow wild flowers instead of
short grass, and tall hedges for wild life.
6/ Don’t use plastic or pesticides.
7/ Reduce your travel.
8/ Change from using fossil
fuels e.g. gas, coal. They will be outlawed in 20 years anyway) Wood is carbon
neutral because we can plant to replace.
9/ If we halved our
world population we could maybe manage as we are. Morally we can’t just do that,
but we can prevent more increase by producing less people.

ISAIAH 3:4 = NATiON SHALL NOT LIFT
UP SWORD AGAINST NATION
The command
- is as appropriate now as when it was first spoken.
If only it
was still just with swords?
Why this design?
a community group was formed in the parish to remember the men and women who
“Did their bit,” a century ago.
Youlgreave
1914-1918 Community Group.
The group’s
ideas grew – and grew – and the many remembrance events held over the four
years, will now culminate in the presentation of a sculpture to Ypres Cathedral,
and community, Belgium on 19th August 2018, accompanied by the Youlgrave
Silver Band, who will play at the Menin Gate and at concerts, All Saints Bell
ringers, supported by the best from over the country, who will ring a unique
peal for 3hrs, WW1 bugle playing, two coaches of 100 people, and TV crew. The
sculpture is of oak, stone and stained glass, 2m x 1m x 1m, designed and built
by village volunteers with help, and donations of materials from many
interested local craftsmen. Some volunteers already had skills, but many have
trained just for this project.
Inside the
Methodist Church here, you will find some of the actual glass panels we have
finished, on display, for a sneak preview, and more information, but only for a
short time. The finished sculpture will stand in the church in August, before
it travels to Belgium
A competition was held last summer, through
the villages or Youlgrave, Alport, Middleton, Stanton, and Birchover, –with
leaflets to every house – inviting anyone to submit ideas in any way they
wanted, so the design could truly be from the people.
Many of the ideas are incorporated,
particularly from the children, such as the three crosses, faceless soldier,
river running through. There is a full representation of a child’s drawing in
one of the panels yet to be finished.
I have based this well dressing on
the glass designs of the sculpture.
Top board - the two stained glass plaques are
in Youlgreave church. The broken glass from the WW1 bombed Ypres cathedral was collected
by Charles Waterhouse and made into a remembrance window for his Brother
Rennie.
Dove of
peace, ring of laurels for peace and protection, the blue leaves of the United
nations symbol, poppies from the battlefeilds, and the sunlight for hope.
Central board –
The unknown soldier on the three crosses of sacrifice. The battlefields
with the lost. The river of life, but tainted. The growing pasture away from
the battle.
Base board – The WW1 graves show men who
fought and died from many religions, and the whole world.
I was
amazed to find that so few nations did NOT take part in this war. Shown in
colour.
Left Side
- the League of Nations symbol formed to keep peace, and succeeded by
the United Nations. The lion of Ypres, Sopworth Camel plane, and the carrier
pigeon used in WW1 for messages.
Right Side -
The sculpture will have both the spire of Ypres Cathedral and the tower
of All saints C of E Church carved in oak,. The Red Cross.
- Judith Orchard - designer
At this time we - the team I formed through the previous summer, had completed only three of the panels of the Stained glass sculpture, so these were placed on display in the Methodist Church tea room. This was the first sighting of the sculpture for the village to see. People drew up to the well dressing and read them were in awe of the panels on display.
These are the three panels in the work room.
You can see features from the panels design in the well dressing.

COLDWELL END WELLDRESSING 2017
JESUS CHANGES WATER IN TO
WINE – John 2:1:1
For many
years we have had concerns about the site of
this Tap
Dressing. In repositioning it here, it was important to ensure it remained the
nearest one to the tap it represents. Our largest problem has been to erect the
top board without the mechanical help of a tractor which cannot fit through the
gates. The team worked hard to come up with a solution and we are particularly grateful
to the Methodist Church members for their enthusiasm and co-operation for re-siting
it here. The theme has been decided jointly and is, I feel, particularly
appropriate to having tackled this problem, resulting in a good solution to please
everyone.
Maybe
it is relevant to us all today, where water may be used as a metaphor
for the problem situations of home and the world, as we hope to change them
into something much better, as with the wine.
THE BIBLE STORY
Jesus's
mother told Jesus, "They have no
wine,"
and
Jesus replied,
"O
Woman, what has this to do with me? My hour has not yet come." His mother
then said to the servants,
"Do
whatever he tells you".
Jesus
ordered the servants to fill containers with water and to draw out some and
take it to the chief steward. After tasting it, without knowing where it had
come from, the steward remarked to the bridegroom that
he had departed from the custom of serving the best wine first by serving it
last.
John
adds that: "Jesus did this, the first of his signs.’
The incorporated pink patches are the
Methodist symbol.

here in the hall.

Coldwell End Well Dressing Statement 2016
Derbyshire well dressings are to say thank you
for water. We also show our thanks for the present year, and remember that we
have choice, freedom and hope for our future, because of many past sacrifices.
Water surrounds Britain. As island people we
have developed our culture, attitudes, language, religions, and also the unity
of 4 individual countries under one flag and Queen.
For almost 1000 years the
watery seas have kept Britain safe from invasion, whilst enabling exploration,
invasion and development throughout the Empire, Europe, and the world. From
this safe haven the British have also been able to protect and help other
countries, and contribute to the winning of two world wars.
Is it because the British view Europe from
being part of it, and as an island looking in, which has led to the EU In/Out vote
this week? (Shown by the Tug of war over the Channel)
TALBOT HOUSE
Talbot house was founded in
Belgium, in 1915, to provide material and spiritual comfort for troops
recovering from the rigours of the front line.
It was founded on 4 main Christian
principals:
1/ To think fairly and overcome prejudice and
discrimination.
2/ To build bravely to establish peace and
harmony in place of
strife
and discord.
3/ To love widely, in service and fellowship
with others, wherever
need
exists.
4/ To witness humbly the practical application
of the Christian
way
of life.
The movement spread after WW1
to become world wide.
The right side panel, and lower corners,
depict the massive number of battles (red) along the Belgium-French border.
Lines show the German, then Allies advance. Initials = Artois, Ypres, Chemin de
Dames, Paris, and the battle of Somme on the 1st July, 100 years ago
which created the largest number of casualties.
The battle of Jutland, on June 1st,
1916, the largest in Naval history.
The apple tree represents the
tree ‘Peace’ planted in 2015 by the Youlgrave 1914/18 Community Group and I
thank them for their help in this design.

and Foolish Builders
Matthew
7:24-27 - New International Version (NIV)
24 “Therefore everyone who
hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall,
because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them
into practice is like a foolish man who
built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat
against that house, and it fell with a
great crash.”
DECISION MAKING – for right or wrong, good or bad. We do it all the
time, and live with the consequences.
The parable of the wise and foolish men
building houses remind us, that, not only is the dressing of wells/taps to
celebrate the importance of water, the power and effects of water, but also to
make us pause and consider the decisions we make.
We hope our decisions are founded on rock, and not sand.

2014 COLDWELL END 'TAP' DRESSING -(The correct title)
This year I again kept to the subject of water.
STATEMENT
GENESIS, Chapter 7 verse 11
to 12.
“THE HEAVENS OPENED AND RAIN
FELL ON EARTH.”
After all the recent flooding through the
winter, I thought it appropriate to appreciate the power and beauty of
rainfall.
Raindrops are always spherical
once they have dropped off their initial hold.
We see images of their
surroundings, reflected on the surface and refracted through the whole droplet.
This distorted view appears upside down the
nearer the droplet to the viewer.
I have used only materials
from this village. Collected, dried or stored recently and over the years, and
from gardens, trees and fields around. The result may be that petals are more
friable then those bought from nurseries.
My thanks goes to everyone
who contributed, and those who have no left petals in their gardens!
Three of the other five dressings chose the theme of the 100 years remembering the First World War. Eachone was entirely different in the thinking, design and colours, but they were all expertly executed and very moving emotionally. The other represented the bells in the church tower. Worth a look on - the Derbyshire well dressings, site, youlgrave, 2014.
Coldwell End Dressing 2013
This year the dressing was made in a much more comfortable garage and it was filmed for ITV for the programme 'Off the Beaten Track'.
Which may be found on 'you tube'
This design was relating the village water to the Bible.
Genesis chapter 1, verse 6 about God parting the waters creating the earth to form the heavens and seas.
The central lowest board shows Bradford river by Youlgrave and the water dependent wild life found there.
The sides show the local spring on one side and the local mine below, on the other.
-------------------------------------------
This was the Coldwell End dressing of 2012
The design was again based on the village, but this time was about the village's year, and achievements.
The top board celebrated Sustainable Youlgrave's 5 year's of existence.
The removal of the Post Office to Parker's shop.
The Youlgrave football club won two trophies.
The local GP. Dr Pickworth retired after 35 years.
The central board - 50 years of performances of village the pantomime. - famous for it's camel and costumes.
The Queen's 60th jubilee was shown by her sitting watching the pantomime, -
and on the base board by taking part in the London Olympic race of life, where she is at the 60 line, behind Queen victoria at 63, but in front of (mad) Jing George at 59 years.
The sides related all the Olympic events.
And the whole is surrounded by the red white and blue British colours.
I helped out in the making of Coldwell End Well Dressing in Youlgrave for some years when I was asked to design it for one year and as happens continued was the permanent designer. I believe I am privileged to do this and hope to continue fro many years as I am always full of new ideas.

Detail
I researched all the past Well dressings and there was never one that was actually about the water in this village of Youlgrave.
Youlgrave is a unique village in that it is the online in the UK that has it's own private water company. The water comes from the hills to the south and collects in a spring in Mawstone hillside across the Bradford river. In 1828 the ladies of the village, fed up with carrying wear from the river each day, arranged to pipe the water to 'taps' along the main street and down Bradford, a house lined street leading down to the river. There were 9 taps in all. The 5 taps along the main street are represented by the present well or tap dressing boards.
Since the 1950s water has of course been piped directly to the homes.
I tried to represent all these parts of the historic story in the design.
The Youlgrave Guides had celebrated 100 years of guiding by making a film of guiding in Youlgrave, so I used there idea of a film as the basic format, bending through time. Each still of the film drip represented a part of the story.
1/ Top = In sepia, people and donkey taking water form the river.
2/ = Women filling their containers from the new taps.
3/ = The church's use of the water, as a Christening.
4/ Base = Present day water uses.
The 9 tap sights can still be seen in the village and down the sides of the dressing design.
Coldwell end dressing being on the bottom board.
The top board had a picture of the rainbow, rain storms, and gathering falling rain onto the Mawstone hill, spring and flooded mine, where it is also stored. This scene continues down and behind the film strip.
The lowest corners celebrated the 90th anniversary of Youlgrave's British Legion on one side and the wedding of The Eire to the throne, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
